The weekend of August 15-16 has been selected as the date for the '98 SLO 4-Wheelers Coyote Lake run. This wil be the fourth annual run to Coyote Lake for the SLO 4-Wheelers. Coyote Lake trail is now open. The Run From past experience departure times for The Coyote Lake Run are diverse. Some members take more time for this run then just the two day weekend. It's not unusual to have some members going up into the Sierra National Forest Thursday night after work, while others opt to go Friday morning , Friday night or even Saturday morning real early for this run. So the best solution might be for SLO 4-Wheeler members to network a little and discover when others plan to depart, and what the different departure times offer. Then make a choice and get together with those you plan to travel with to resolve travel details. Most important of all, let the trail boss know what your plans are. Call me, Randy P. with your plans for the weekend. I'll use the information to keep track of who's arriving at what time etc etc. Departure times from Coyote are also very diverse for the same reason. Some leave Sunday afternoon to head home to the coast. Others leave early Sunday morning to do the Swam Lake trail Sunday & Monday, traveling home Monday night or Tuesday. Some stay at Coyote Sunday night & travel home on Monday.... Make your plans in advance if possible, but there is room for flexibility here. The trail boss will be departing Friday Night at 7:00 from the Santa Margarita. We can meet people on the way in Atascadero and Paso as requested by others departing Sunday night. Call Randy P. to make arrangements that meet your needs. So just exactly where is Coyote Lake anyhow ? Coyote Lake is located Northeast of Shaver Lake in the Sierra National Forest East of Fresno, CA. To get there from the SLO county coast you proceed NE on Hwy 101 & 41 to the Fresno Area (about 130 miles). Then NE on Hwy 168 through Prather & up the 4-Lane to Shaver Lake (about 60 miles). Stay on Hwy 168 through Shaver toward Huntington Lake . At the Tamarack creek bridge, 13 ½ miles from Shaver, turn right on the Red Mountain OHV trails forest service road. Follow the signs to the Red Mountain OHV trails & Coyote Lake. Also see the detailed maps attached to this events flyer. Time elements from the coast to: Fresno is about 3 hours Shaver is about 4 hours Sand Flats about 5 hours Sand Flats to Coyote is about ½ day of good 4-wheelin' 4-Wheeler Preparedness The best way to enjoy Coyote Lake is to be prepared for the run in advance. There will be a Safety Check of all vehicles on the run. Check your vehicle against the SLO 4-Wheeler safety check list before you leave home (Jesse H., is our Safety person and will provide you with the list). The Coyote Lake trail is a serious rock crawling trail. You will experience body damage and vehicle mechanical failure on this short run from Red lake to Coyote Lake. Preparing your vehicle for rock crawling with bigger tires, spring lifts, rocker panel skid plates, low gears, locking diffs, winches, tow points, spare parts & tools all can make the run more enjoyable. Develop a trail survival strategy with a fellow SLO 4-wheeler. Enter into an agreement before you get on the trail to help your buddy through or out if he/she have mechanical problems. As a trail boss I do not guarantee your successful arrival at Coyote Lake. If you brake down, I'll try to help you get back to Hwy 168 on my way back out from Coyote on Sunday or Monday. You are ultimately responsible for your own destiny. So what's there to do at Coyote Lake ? Once you have arrived at Coyote Lake, there's plenty to do. Set up camp, gather fire wood, cook good food, fish for trout in the lake (bring a fishing license), swim in the lake, canoe in the lake, hike 2.6 miles to First Dinkey, South Lake & Swede Lake, enjoy SLO 4-Wheeler comradery, fix your broken 4-wheeler, enjoy the campfire & kick back and relax are just a few of the possibilities. Even if you have some mechanical trouble, Red Lake is a good place to camp & Fish. Cotoye Lake Trailboss: Randy P.
