U.S. Bureau of Land Management Visitor Center @ Midland Trail Road and California Highway 14 CB Channel 7 DIRECTIONS: From Highway 101, North (or south) to Highway 46, East to Hwy 99, South to Hwy 58, East to Hwy 14, North make this about a 200 mile trip. There is a cutoff to the north (left turn) off Hwy 58 coming down the grade towards Mojave, to Hwy 14 that saves a few minutes. Why yes, you could take Hwy 58 from Santa Margarita, however it may be a little early for the wildflowers in our local mountains. SLO 4 Wheelers will begin the March club "run" through this area of the high California Desert. Know for its natural beauty from geologic formations and desert plants and animals this area is also rich in history of mining and moviemaking. The area is crisscrossed with Off Road Vehicle trails of varying difficulties through rock, sandy wash bottoms and erosion deposited soils; some of these trails have "challenging" sections. Red Rock Canyon is a State Recreation Area/Park with a scenic campground (tables, running water and pit toilets) and visitor center. Within the "park" there is a designated ORV trail system which connects to surrounding trails leading to BLM administered areas. Jawbone Canyon and Dove Springs are well know in the motorcycle community as "open recreation areas". The State Park and the BLM cooperatively administrate an area east of the park, which includes Last Chance Canyon, Roaring Ridge, and a number of other trails. Gasoline and some services have been available at the Jawbone Store, near by the BLM Visitor Center. Mojave (highway 58 and 14) has groceries, auto and motorcycle parts, motels and even fast food in addition to gasoline, about a 30 minute drive south. Ridgecrest (northeast about 30 miles) has a hospital. Camping may be available at Red Rock Canyon (this is a popular time of the year due to the wildflowers and milder daytime temperatures) and dry camping is allowed in the BLM areas. Expect cool nights, bright and windy days. WELCOME! NEW MEMBER! Troy & Tammi G. Cj-7 Jeep SLO 4 Wheelers General Meeting Summary March 4, 1998 President, Ray M. opened the meeting and asked for introductions of the nearly 40 people who showed up for the March general meeting. Ray also announced that our Vice President Tom C. will be moving to Canoga Park to take a new job, and that we need an Acting Vice-President. Mike A. Jr. and Jim Z. are interested and a selection will be made at the next meeting. Treasurer, Brian E. announced that our balance is unchanged from last month and the new checking account will be up and running next month. CA4WDC Liaison, Mark B. is our liaison to the California Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs, and he signed up 4 new members this month. Events Director, Randy P., Called for ideas for the day run, and Jessie H. stepped up to the task and will be heading up a run up to Garcia Ridge, with a back-up of Pine Mountain if Garcia Ridge is still too wet. He will be contacting the Forest Service and it is up to the members to call Jessie Friday night and let him know you're interested. Trail bosses just don't have time to call everyone in the club, so it's up to you! Randy introduced Joe R. who will be leading March's Monthly Run to Redrock Canyon, Jawbone Canyon, Last Chance Canyon & Dove Springs on the 23st and 22nd of March. Joe presented a map, and description of the run. It gets cool at night this time of year, so be prepared. Since there may be several departure times, Joe suggested that the meeting place be on Saturday Morning at 9:00 AM at the BLM Station near Jawbone Canyon Store at the junction of Highway 14 and Jawbone Canyon Road. So far, Joe, Jim Z, Jerry J. and Preston M. are going. They will be monitoring Channel 7. You'll have to leave early if you leave on Saturday morning. It takes about 4 hours depending on what you are driving. If you are interested, call Joe, his number is on the roster. Our new member, Troy G. proposed and will be heading up a possible day run to Camp Roberts. A tentative date of April 18 has been suggested. The request has been presented to the Post Commander and a decision is pending. If it's a go, we will leave from Denney's in Paso at 9:00 AM on Saturday. There will be another meeting between now and then, so more details will be ironed out. A great big welcome and thanks to Troy for bringing some new blood and enthusiasm to the club! Anyone wanting to go on the Mojave Road in May can contact Randy for an application. Randy wound up the Events section of the meeting with a report on the day run to Hunter Liggett and the Pacific Coast Jeep Trail, which happened on valentines day. Land Use Liaison, Will H attended the February CCORE meeting. There is a new OHV hotline at 438-4048 which you can call and see which trails ore open and closed. CCORE is working on a second printing of a brochure which is a directory of 4WD and motorcycle clubs in this area. Kathy asked that our numbers be updated. Jim B had asked last month about the number of new gates which have gone up in our area. Will said the Forest Service is responding to complaints about a gate at "Baja" and will be removing it. Cuesta Ridge West is closed. Will said the Forest Service figures that there is about 50% compliance concerning the Forest Adventure Pass. Adopted Trails Garcia Ridge Adopt-a-Trail is closed because of rain, and it is hoped we can get out there this weekend on our day run. Pine Mountain Road Adopt-a-Trail is also closed because of wet weather, but it will be our backup run if we can't get on to Garcia Ridge. Randy announced that Pozo Grade Road is completely washed out, so it will be necessary to go out 58 and approach Pine Mountain from Red Mountain Road. Membership Director, Dave H.,reported that there are now 52 paid member families. He gave our membership cards to those present and will see that the other members get there cards. He will be putting the current phone list in the next newsletter. Newsletter Editor, Debbie K. asked that the trailbosses get a run report to her Sunday afternoon. Ways & Means Director, Jennell T., had a 50-50 raffle and Ray announced that it was suggested that we have a big 4WD garage sale. Safety Chairperson, Jessie H said that Debbie had already printed up a lot of the safety lists, and he suggested that we go through these before we print any more. We will just have to write in who our trail buddy is. Scrapbook, Avanette Z. brought in the new updated scrapbook. She will be happy to include any photos that have the date, run and some kind of sequence for her to put them in the book. Virtual Committee, Mark B reported that our Web Page is broken, and that Jeff S. will have it up and running as soon as possible. Under "For the Good of the Club" Dave D. asked if we could put a $7.00 add in the Easy Add once a month. Good Idea. Board of Directors Meeting will be Thursday, March 26, at 5:30 for dinner and 6:00 meeting. Other businessJim B announced that there will be condor releases periodically this year. If you are interested, call Cindy. They usually only give about 2 days notice, and usually are on a weekday. There are mud races on Curbaril Drive in Atascadero on Sunday night. Will someone who knows about that fill the rest of us in?
