How bout some music to read by- ADOPTED TRAILS CLEAN UP GARCIA RIDGE Saturday April 25, 1998 Workday Crew: Will H (white cherokee), Jesse H (tan toyota), Winger (running fool), Debbie & Richard K (gray wrangler), Dave S. (red cherokee), Mike H. and friend Steve (bronco II w/toyota running gear), Scott P. (tan toyota) and Ed B (orange cj5) met at Pozo Ranger Station, collected the equipment from Mike B., our friendly forrest ranger, and headed out to Garcia Ridge. The group cleared trees off the trail, cleared brush for another choice picnic spot, set pipe in concrete for the retaining wall for the existing picnic table, and cleared the trail for debris. Was a good day for a run and everyone pitched in and enjoyed the day. PINE MOUNTAIN Saturday, May 9, 1998 Workday Crew: Randy & Kathy P, (white cj), Jesse H. (tan toyata), Mike Jr. (toyota 4runner), Al & Judy and daughter Annie (green wrangler), Debbie & Richard K. (gray wrangler). By way of Los Chichas the group made it's way up to Pine Mountain. One mishap and one close call . Our new members Al & Judy had the unfortunate experience of heading up a slight incline and not being able to see what was directly in front of them and landing in a wash out and bending their right front spring. With the help of Jesse H.'s winch and Randy P's help they were able to bend the spring without snapping it. Another washout almost (4 panicked vehicles behind him) washed out Jesse H., who stopped just in time before going nose first into it, rear end sticking straight up. Cleaning debris and removing trees and branches from the trail, with discussion of having a chain saw work day to clear out the area around the picnic table the group made it safely back. Mike and Jesse stopped on the way back to check out La Panza campground and test out Mike's new 4 runner. The rest of us headed out checking out Navajo Road which was a challenge in itself due to all the damage from the rains, and Al just sure that we were lost forever and going the wrong way. Over all it was a gorgeous day, the wild flowers blooming, the streams running, green everywhere you looked. ______________ --SLO County 4WD Club Board of Directors Meeting--- Mark B's House Thursday May 28, 1998 6:00 PM SLO County 4WD Club Board of Directors President Ray M. Treasurer, Brian E, reviewed our financial status. CA4WDC liaison, Mark B passed out a brochure from the state level concerning how to dispose of used motor oil. Events Director, Randy P, arranged Pine Mountain Trail check with Jessie H volunteering as Trail Boss. There were 4 or 5 interested members. The group will be leaving the 76 station in Santa Margarita at 9:00 AM and will be meeting the Paso faction (Mike Jr) at the trailhead about 10 AM. Bring a lunch.. May's run will The Spring Thing. On May 23, 24 & 25th. Mark B is heading up the event and some more details were ironed out. Mark has prepared a flyer to include in the newsletter, which will come out the week after this meeting. Kathy P is in charge of the Potluck on Saturday night and was assigned to purchase meat for the BBQ. Mark is checking out Turkey Flat for camping as a few members have RV's they want to use. There will be three potential day runs and a night run on Saturday night. The idea is to introduce our area to newcomers and to get out and have some FUN! Joe R is interested in taking a group to Lockwood Creek area on June 6th, so keep that in the back of your mind. June's run will be to Hume Lake with Will H on June 26th, 27th, 28th, and 29th. Although some of us will be there Friday through Monday, you may opt to take a shorter version and arrangements can be made to join up with the group if you contact Will in advance. Sequoia is about a 3.5-hour trip from here, and Will plans to do 3 or 4 trails including a Buck Rock overnight. Jim B gave a run report on the trip last month out to California Valley. It was quite well attended (5 or 6 vehicles) and they went up toward Caliente Ridge. Adopted trails Jessie H gave a report on a Garcia Ridge Trail Check. Mike B provided tools and the crew cut back two large manzanita bushes. Mike will be trying to locate a picnic table for us to put in a newly cleared spot on the trail. Land Use Liaison, Will H attended the CCORE meeting this month and he said it was very well attended. Will very adeptly pointed out to us that even though he babysat us and handed us a political action letter that was ready to send, very few of us followed through. For shame. We are sending Will to the meeting for information, and we should be acting on it. We were asked through Mike to list our activities that relate to keeping trails in this area open, as he will be nomination us for an award. Just being considered is an honor. Kathy will be outlining our past achievenments for us to submit to Mike by the next CCORE meeting. Remember the 24 hour line will tell you which trails in our area are open. (805) 438-4048. Newsletter editor, Debbie K said contributions to the newsletter should be in to her in a timnely manner. Ways & Means Brian T ran the 50/50 raffle and the lucky winner split $30.00 with the club treasury. Under Committee Reports, Promotional chair, Lynn S, was not present. Safety chairman, Jessie H has had safety checks at all club runs. Scrapbook Avanette Z brought in the Scrapbook. Ava has kept the scrapbook up with current pictures every meeting. She deserves a big thank you. She reported that we only hav 17 pages left to fill and we need a new book. Kathy will be ordering one. Telephone chair, Kathy P went on vacation and didn't call anyone and forgot to get a substitute. Virtual Committee Chairman, Mark B asked if of the kids could name the tune that our website plays. Not even the adults could, so get on the web and listen! Board of Directors Meeting will be at Mark B's, Thursday, May 28 at 6:00 for dinner and 6:30 meeting.
